How long does a small business website take?

Most of the waiting is not the design. It is the photographs, the text and the decisions. Here is what holds a website up, and what to send so yours is ready quickly.

How long does a website take to build?

A small business website usually takes a few weeks, and the biggest factor is how quickly the owner sends their photographs and details. At Nuvapage, for Starter and Business, your preview comes within 21 days of getting your photos and details, or your deposit back in full.

That 21 days is a promise about the preview, which is the finished site working on your own phone. It starts the day we have everything we need, not the day you first get in touch. If photographs arrive in week three, the clock starts in week three.

Most previews are ready in about 14 days. The 21 days is the written limit. A simple site with clear photographs and ready text sits at the quick end. A site that needs more pages, a booking system or a menu takes longer, because there is more to write, check and test.

Whoever builds your site, ask for the start point in plain words. Does the clock start when you pay, when you send your photographs, or when you reply to the first email? The answer tells you who is likely to cause any delay.

What actually slows a website down?

Almost every delay comes from waiting for material or for decisions from the owner, not from the building itself. Five things cause most of it.

  • Photographs: if you have no good pictures of your premises or your work, someone has to take them, and that has to be booked around your opening hours.
  • Text: prices, opening hours, a short story about the business and a list of services. Owners often mean to write these and keep putting it off.
  • Decisions: a name, a colour feeling, which services to show first. Each unanswered question stops the work for a day or more.
  • Extra features: online booking, a menu, a gallery or a quote form each add pages, copy and testing.
  • Changes after the preview: a few small changes are quick. Rewriting every page after the design is done restarts the work.

What should I send so my website is ready sooner?

Send your photographs, your prices, your opening hours and your contact details in one go, and the work can start straight away. Everything else can be agreed along the way.

  1. Photographs of your premises, your work and, if you are happy to, yourself. Phone photographs are fine: we send you a short list of what to photograph.
  2. Your services and prices, written the way you would say them to a customer.
  3. Your opening hours, address, phone number and email.
  4. The link to your Google Business Profile, if you have one, so the map and reviews button point to the right place.
  5. Any wording you already like, such as the text on your sign, a leaflet or your Instagram bio.

If your photographs are not good enough, there is another route. We can film your premises on a phone and enhance the best shots with AI: better light and colour, but still your real premises and your real work.

Does a bigger website take longer?

Yes. A one-page site is the quickest, and every extra page or feature adds writing, photographs and testing.

  • Starter: a one-page site, the quickest to build because there is one set of text and one set of photographs to prepare.
  • Business: several pages designed to win enquiries, with a gallery, booking or menu, a link to your Google reviews and a quote form. More pages mean more material to collect.
  • Signature: a fully bespoke design, priced per project. It takes a lot longer, because every part is designed for you, so its preview date is agreed and written in your quote.
  • Whatever the package, the preview comes first: you see the site working on your own phone before you pay the balance.

What happens after the preview?

After the preview you can ask for changes, then approve the site and it goes live on your own web address. Two rounds of changes are included, within the agreed scope.

You tap any part of the preview to leave a note, so the changes are specific rather than a long email. Half of the price is paid to start and half when you approve the preview, so you never pay the balance for something you have not seen.

Before launch, the site is checked for speed with Google Lighthouse and for accessibility. That is part of the work, not an extra step you need to ask for.

What takes time that your designer cannot speed up?

Some steps depend on other companies, not on your designer, and they are worth starting early. The main one is verifying your Google Business Profile.

Google chooses how you verify your profile: a phone call or text, an email, a video call or a postcard. Google says most postcard codes arrive within 14 days, and that its review after you complete the steps takes up to 5 business days, and occasionally longer (checked on Google's Business Profile help page, October 2026).

Start this while your website is being built. Then, when the site goes live, the link on your profile points to a finished page and your map details are already in place.

If you need a new domain name, it is registered in your name, or transferred to you before handover if we buy it for you. Say early which web address you would like, so any problems with the name come up in week one rather than at launch.

How do I get a quick quote and a start date?

Tell us about your business and we will come back to you soon with a fixed price. Every price is agreed before work begins, so you know the cost and the timing before you commit.

  • See the packages and fixed prices in the prices section of our home page.
  • Read our guide on what a website costs, so you know what to compare.
  • Read our guide to Google Maps, and start your profile while the site is built.
  • Email us at hello@nuvapage.co.uk or use the quote form on the home page.
